May is when the flowers are all blooming, the temperatures are rising, and a large number of home shoppers are interested in buying. But the springtime housing market isn’t just for buyers and sellers.

This is the time of year when a large number of home owners are highly motivated to cross off a few items from their home improvement to-do lists.

According to a new survey of NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) remodelers released today to celebrate May’s National Home Remodeling Month the most common projects in 2016 still are kitchen and bathroom remodels. However this year, whole-house remodels and both large and small additions are gaining in popularity.

Here are some words of remodeling advice from NAHB professional remodelers:

Kevin Vick of Vick Construction & Remodeling suggests “before starting your home improvement project a good plan needs to be in place. This is where your wish list comes in.  Use this list to create an outline describing what to include in the project.”

“Although there are many elements to consider in planning for your project, there are two basic considerations – function, and the look or aesthetics of your future home. It may be that your kitchen or bathroom is very functional, but you want a new or updated look.  On the other hand, it may be that you need to re-design certain rooms or even the layout of your home itself.  You may need and want an open floor plan, or perhaps you need to create a private corner of your home for relaxing at the end of a busy day.”
