“Contemporary design” and “modern design” are terms often used in the world of interior design, architecture, and art, but they can sometimes be confusing due to their similar-sounding names and overlapping characteristics.

Modern design references a specific design movement specifically between 1920’s and 1950’s. This time period emphasized minimalist design, a neutral color palette, and steel, glass and concrete materials. Contemporary design is a more general term describing what’s on-trend now. However, it too features a neutral color palette, white, grays and blacks and materials like stainless steel, glass, concrete, and natural stone.

Contemporary kitchen design refers to a modern and up-to-date approach to creating functional and stylish kitchens. It often incorporates the latest trends, materials, technologies, and design concepts while emphasizing clean lines, simplicity, and a sense of openness. Less is more in contemporary kitchen design. Straight lines and minimalistic design elements create a clutter-free and organized space. The focus is minimalist, using only essential elements, and avoiding unnecessary ornamentation. This results in a visually appealing and uncluttered environment.

When choosing cabinets for your contemporary style, consider frameless, full overlay to maximize storage and to provide a streamlined look.  There are two types of cabinet doors that are typically used when designing a contemporary kitchen, Shaker and flat-front. The cabinetry often features smooth and glossy finishes, such as high-gloss lacquer, acrylic, or thermofoil. These finishes enhance the modern and sleek aesthetic of the cabinets. Handles and knobs are often kept minimal or entirely eliminated for a seamless and uncluttered appearance. Push-to-open mechanisms and integrated handles are common alternatives. In order to keep the kitchen organized and clutter-free, pull-out pantry shelves, deep drawers, and cleverly concealed storage are often integrated into the design.

To keep with the minimalist streamlined design, stainless-steel built-in appliances are the preferred choice. Built-in appliances with the latest technology, such as touchscreen displays, smart refrigerators, induction cooktops, and integrated ovens, are common in contemporary kitchens.

Contemporary design can also include bold design statements. This could be achieved through a unique backsplash using hexagon, herringbone or chevron tiles, all classic, timeless, popular choices. Or, consider a dramatic island with a waterfall design, in which the countertop has vertically extending sides that reach to the floor.

Contemporary spaces are a fluid and eclectic mix of various styles, often drawing inspiration from different time periods. There are no specific set of rules or characteristics. It embraces a wide range of materials, colors, textures, and forms, allowing for greater creative freedom and experimentation. The design is versatile and can incorporate various elements based on personal preferences and can be customized to create a kitchen that suits your individual style and needs.
