Remodelers Council Renovates the FamilyTime Crisis Center
On April 24, 2015, volunteers from the Remodelers Council of the Greater Houston Builders Association renovated two kitchens and a large bathroom for the Crisis Center. All materials and labor were donated by GHBA member companies and the Remodelers Council members.
For the bathroom renovations, the Remodelers Council installed new cabinets, countertops, ceramic flooring, sinks, plumbing fixtures, tubs, shower stalls and toilets. Handrails and transfer seats were added to enable handicapped residents. All walls were painted and new lighting was added including a tunnel skylight to add natural daylight.
The residents’ kitchen was remodeled with new cabinetry, countertops, backsplashes, three refrigerators, one dishwasher, and a new sink. All the walls were painted; new lighting and a tunnel skylight were added. The busy staff cook’s kitchen was vastly improved with a new double oven, a vent hood, sink, faucet, industrial shelving and modified lower cabinets for easier access.
The results were dramatic, and appreciation for the project was immediate: “The renovation of the shelter kitchens and bathroom by the Remodelers Council was a dream come true,” said FamilyTime Director Judy Cox. The kitchen manager, who prepares meals for up to 30 clients every night, stated, “Thank you for all your hard work for the shelter. The double oven works wonderful, making cooking so much easier and the exhaust fan over the stove with shiny, even light, helps me to see better.”
The shelter clients, who watched as the rooms were renovated, expressed heartfelt thanks: “Thank you for remodeling our temporary home, it’s nice to know there are good people everywhere.” And, from another client, “We are so excited about the new kitchens and bathroom. We are all grateful for people like you who help others without getting anything in return.”
I feel privileged to have been able to help with the renovations at the FamilyTime Crisis Center. I look forward to the next charity project!
